About Girona Costa Brava Airport
Girona Costa Brava Airport (GRO) was first opened in 1965 to serve the developing tourism around the Spanish coast. It only developed slowly until the 2000s when low cost airlines marketed it as an alternative to Barcelona’s El Prat International Airport.
Today close to 2 million passengers pass through the airport each year and in the summer months there are flights from more than 47 European cities in 16 countries.
The airport is located on the southern edge of Girona in the suburb of Vilobi d’Onyar and has excellent road links to the E15 connecting Perpignan in France to the south of Spain and the N-11 to Barcelona and Madrid.
Tips for driving on the Costa Brava
Hiring a car is a great way to explore Spain’s Costa Brava. We’d recommend using GPS to navigate the region’s excellent road network. As in the rest of mainland Europe, you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road as you set off from Girona Costa Brava Airport. If you have not driven in this part of the world before, we’d advise checking the road rules for driving in Spain before you set off.
